George Homoştean

George Homoştean (born June 19, 1923 in Deva , Hunedoara district ; † December 21, 2016 in Alba Iulia , Alba district ) was a Romanian politician of the Romanian Communist Party PMR (Partidul Muncitoresc Român) and from 1965 PCR (Partidul Comunist Român) , who was Minister of the Interior between 1978 and 1987.

Life

After attending school, George Homoştean worked as a day laborer in the Pietroasa quarry between 1939 and 1942 and graduated from the School for Reserve NCOs, after which he was sergeant and trainer of the gendarmerie in Bihor County , Suceava County and Hunedoara County in 1946 . In October 1947 he became a member of the then Romanian Communist Party PdCR (Partidul Comunist din România) and also attended the central school " Filimon Sârbu " of the Uniunea Tineretului Muncitor (UTM), the youth association of the PMR. In 1948 he became secretary of the PMR party committee of Pietroasa and then organizer of the party committee of Deva , before he was secretary of the committee of Uniunea Tineretului Muncitor (UTM), the youth association of the PMR, in Geoagiu in 1949 . Then he was an instructor of the UTM committee in the Hunedoara district and then in 1950 an instructor and finally head of the Agriculture Section of the UTM Central Committee. In 1953 he moved to the Foreign Relations section of the Central Committee of the PMR, where he was responsible for cadre files. From 1953 to 1955 he was an instructor for the PMR Committee in Hunedoara County. He graduated from the Faculty of History of the Babeş-Bolyai University Cluj and the Socio-Political Academy “ Stefan Gheorghiu ” in Bucharest . Thereafter he was head of the cadre section of the People's Council of the Hunedoara District and, between 1958 and 1965, first secretary of the PMR Committee of Sebeş .

Then Homoştean 1965 Secretary for Agriculture of the PCR Committee of the Hunedoare County and then acted between February 1968 and September 5, 1978 as the first Secretary of the PCR Party Committee in the Alba County . At the same time he was, in personal union, from February 1968 to September 1978 President of the Executive Committee of the People's Council of Alba County. At the tenth party conference of the PCR (October 6 to 12, 1969) he became a member of the Central Committee (ZK) of the PCR and was a member of this body on November 24, 1989. At the same time he became a member of the Grand National Assembly (Marea Adunare Națională) in 1969 and was a member of it until 1989. During his membership in parliament he was a member of the Defense Commission of the Grand National Assembly between March 22, 1975 and November 11, 1978.

On September 5th, 1978 George Homoştean sparked Teodor Coman as interior minister (Ministru de Internal) , and has held this ministerial post in the Cabinet Mănescu II , Cabinet Verdeţ I , Cabinet Verdeţ II , Cabinet Dăscălescu I and in the Cabinet Dăscălescu II until October 5, 1987 whereupon Tudor Postelnicu succeeded him. As Minister of the Interior, he was also a member of the Defense Council of the Socialist Republic of Romania (Consiliul Apărării al Republicii Socialiste România) between September 4, 1978 and October 3, 1987 . After leaving the Council of Ministers, he was first vice-president of the Executive Committee of the People's Council of the Hunedoara District from October 19, 1987 to March 31, 1989 and was temporarily also a member of the National Council of the Front of Democracy and the Socialist Unit FDUS (Frontului Democrației și Unității Socialiste ) . On April 26, 1989 he became ambassador to Czechoslovakia and remained in this position until the collapse of communism in the course of the Romanian revolution on December 22, 1989.

George Homoştean has received several awards for his longstanding services and received, among other things, the Star of the People's Republic of Romania fifth class (Ordinul Steaua Republicii Populare Române) in 1959 , the Order of Labor Third Class (Ordinul Muncii) in 1961 , and in 1962 the Star of the People's Republic of Romania fourth class, 1967 the order of August 23, fourth class (Ordinul 23 August) , 1966 the order of Tudor Vladimirescu fifth class (Ordinul Tudor Vladimirescu) , 1971 the order of work, second class and 1981 the order of August 23, second class.
