Ștefan Gheorghiu (born January 15, 1879 in Ploieşti , † March 19, 1914 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian socialist and trade unionist .

Life

Gheorghiu, son of a worker, joined the workers' club ( Club al muncitorilor ) in his hometown. After the dissolution of the Romanian Social Democratic Labor Party ( Partidul Social-Democrat al Muncitorilor din România ) in 1899, Gheorghiu joined the Liberal Party and was committed to the restoration of the Labor Party and the formation of trade unions . During the Romanian peasant uprising of 1907 he supported the demands of the peasants. In the same year he was sentenced to six months in prison for incitement. In 1907 he was elected to the General Council of the Romanian Trade Unions in absentia. After the restoration of the Social Democratic Party ( Partidul Social Democrat Român ) in January 1910, Gheorghiu fought the revisionist leadership of the party. In 1912 he was the leader of a group of socialists who opposed Romania's participation in the Second Balkan War . In the same year he published the anti-war manifesto Război războiului (War on War). Gheorghiu was elected secretary of the Romanian Transport Workers' Union ( Uniunea muncitorilor de transport din România ) in 1912 and led a strike in Brăila in April 1913 .

Gheorghiu died of tuberculosis at the age of 35 .

Honors

The Romanian Communist Party College was named after him from 1946 to 1989. The Romanian Post issued a special stamp in 1979 for his 100th birthday.
