Cornelis J. Bute

Cornelis Johan Bute (born October 22, 1889 in Arnhem , † July 27, 1979 in The Hague ) was a Dutch organist , carilloneur and composer .

Life

Bute was blind from birth and attended the school for the blind in Amsterdam from the age of eight . He received his first organ lessons from CF Hendriks junior and piano lessons from B. Idis. He soon became an auxiliary organist for the Reformed Church in Amsterdam. In 1908 he got a job as a temporary worker at the Grote of Sint-Walburgskerk in Zutphen , which was converted into a permanent position two years later. He learned his skill essentially as a self-taught. In 1928 he passed his B diploma as a church and concert organist. Later he began studying glockenspiel with the equally blind carilloneur Willem Créman and in 1950 was appointed city carilloneur of Zutphen.

After more than sixty years at the Walburgskerk in Zutphen, Bute left in 1968 as a church organist. As a concert organist, he had a penchant for German and French Romanticism and for the work of Johann Sebastian Bach . He also often played works by Dutch composers. Over the years he developed into a talented improviser. In 1938 he took part in the first Dutch improvisation concert in the Utrecht Cathedral together with Anthon van der Horst , Hendrik Andriessen and Jan Mul .
