Cornelis Rudolphus Theodorus Krayenhoff

Corneli ( u ) s Rudolphus Theodorus (since 1815 baron ) Krayenhoff (born June 2, 1758 in Nijmegen , † November 24, 1840 ibid) was a Dutch doctor, general, cartographer and minister.

Life

Krayenhoff studied medicine at the University of Harderwijk and then practiced in Amsterdam . When civil unrest broke out in the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands (1795), he went over to the French and, at the request of Jean-Charles Pichegru, took command of the Amsterdam Guard. In May 1795 he was appointed lieutenant colonel and adjunct inspector of the fortifications. On behalf of the government of the Batavian Republic (1798), he made a new map of the northern provinces of the Netherlands, which appeared 23 years later.

King Louis Bonaparte appointed Krayenhoff his adjutant general in 1805, then director general of the war depot, later major general and finally minister of war in 1809 , and Krayenhoff brilliantly justified the trust placed in him during the campaigns of 1805, 1806 and 1809. After the voluntary resignation of Louis (1810) he was appointed by Napoléon General Inspector of Geniuses, but declared himself in October 1813 for the party of patriots. As governor of Amsterdam, he commanded the unsuccessful siege of Naarden . In 1814 he was commissioned to head the genius corps to organize the so-called Waterstaat , ie the management of bridges and dams. In 1815 he was appointed baron.

The king later entrusted him with a mission to Curaçao . Returning from there, he was charged with fraud in the construction of the southern fortresses, and after his acquittal retired in 1830, he lived in Nijmegen in Gelderland , where he died on November 24, 1840.
