Cornelis de Groot
Cornelis de Groot (also: Cornelius Huygensz Grotius ; * July 25, 1546 in Delft , † July 25, 1610 in Leiden ) was a Dutch jurist.
Life
Cornelis was the son of Delft mayor Hugo Cornelius de Groot (* 1511 in Delft; † April 12, 1567) and his first wife Maria Wisse, daughter of the mayor of Haarlem Gerrit Wisse and his wife Elselinge van Heemskerk. He is an uncle of the famous legal scholar Hugo Grotius . He received his first education through private tuition in his place of birth and began his studies at the University of Leuven . Here he had studied the philosophical sciences for four years. At the age of twenty he continued his education in Paris, then spent two years at the University of Orléans , where he obtained a licentiate in civil law in 1566. When he returned home, he worked as a lawyer for some time and after the death of his father in 1567 took on various activities in the Delft Council.
When he founded the University of Leiden he was one of the first faculty at the school. On July 17, 1575, he was given a chair for philosophy, with the assignment to teach law. He mainly held lectures on Roman and feudal law. In 1583 he renounced his professorship. Four years later he reapplied for the Leiden professorship, which he was again awarded. He also took part in the organizational tasks of the Leiden University and was rector of the Alma Mater several times . He died after a short illness.
His marriage to Gertrud Uyteneng († 1617), the daughter of Frederik Uyteneng and Anna van Renesse, remained childless on November 1, 1579.
