Cornelius David Krieghoff (born June 19, 1815 in Amsterdam , † March 5, 1872 in Chicago ) is one of the most famous Canadian painters of the 19th century. His work often shows the living environment of the French-born rural population of Canada and the First Nations tribes.

Life

Trained in Schweinfurt and Düsseldorf in the 1830s, Krieghoff reached New York in 1836, where he joined the army and made drawings during the Seminole Wars that he later used as the basis for oil paintings . In 1840 he married and moved to Montreal , Canada. Here he made pictures of the Mohawk living in the nearby Kahnawake reservation . At the end of 1871, after extensive travels through Europe, he moved from Québec to Chicago, where he died a few months later.
