Cornelius Stewart (born October 7, 1989 in Kingstown ) is a Vincentian football player .

Club career

Stewart was born in Kingstown, St. Vincent , but grew up in the nearby suburb of Questelles . From 2001 to 2007 he played in the youth division with System 3 FC before he played for Hope International in the highest national class of the island state from 2007 . At the end of 2009 Stewart came to the Vancouver Whitecaps , in which his compatriot Marlon James was under contract, and completed 19 league appearances (2 goals) in the subsequent 2010 season in the USSF Division 2 Professional League . Shortly before the end of the season he was taken out of the line-up when his participation in international matches was imminent to make room for other players.

For the 2011 season, the Whitecaps moved up to Major League Soccer , but Stewart received no contract offer, although the team was named “Newcomer of the Year 2010”. Instead, the striker, whose strengths are his speed and athleticism, is still part of the residency line-up of the Whitecaps in the USL PDL , but trains with the professional team and is also used for its reserve team in the MLS Reserve Division .

National team

With the U-20 selection of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Stewart took part in the qualifying rounds of the CONCACAF U-20 championship in 2009 . He scored eleven goals in seven games. In the first qualifying round he scored both goals in the 2-1 win against Guyana as well as the 1-0 winner against Grenada and also scored five times in the 23-1 win against the British Virgin Islands. In the 2nd round he scored the only Vincentian goal, the 1-0 win against St. Kitts and Nevis, which was enough to move into the 3rd round. This took place in Kingstown and after two wins against the Dominican Republic and Haiti (winner by Stewart), the team only missed direct qualification for the continental finals after a 2-0 defeat in the last game against Jamaica in front of 4,000 spectators. As runner-up in the Caribbean zone, St. Vincent then had to play in the play-off against Honduras, third in the Central America qualification. Stewart gave his team the lead with a penalty in the first half, but Honduras turned the game around in the second half and qualified for the finals with a 3-1 win.

In 2007 Stewart made his senior team debut in St. Vincent and the Grenadines . In 2008 he played as a substitute in the 4-1 second leg defeat against Canada in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup , at the Caribbean Championship 2010 he played all six games in his home country and led the team against Montserrat as captain when he scored his first international goal scored.
