Corny is the most famous muesli bar in Germany.

history

The history of the Corny muesli bars begins in the early 1980s, when a former managing director of Schwartauer Werke discovered the cereal bars (translated: muesli bars) that are well-known there and in the USA on a business trip to Canada . He took the idea with him to Germany and launched the muesli bars under the name Corny in various test markets. In 1984 the official market launch followed under the name "Corny, the muesli bar".

At the time of the market launch, there was no comparable product in Germany or Europe. Compared to the popular “sweet” bars, Corny was a novelty on the one hand, and a risk on the other because it was not known. Corny was initially placed on the shelves of the sweet bars. However, it was only successful when “Corny, the bar” was renamed “Corny, the muesli bar” and was henceforth to be found in mueslis and cornflakes. In addition, a major advertising campaign in the classic media of television, radio and print increased awareness of the product. Among other things, Corny relied on competitive athletes at the time. The professional cyclist Jan Ullrich (2000) and the swimmer Franziska van Almsick (2002) advertised Corny in the TV spots at the time of their greatest successes. In 2009, another prominent face was added with the moderator Johannes B. Kerner . The famous Beetle spot from 1997 is likely to be Corny's best-known TV spot to this day. Corny is now the market leader in Germany.

To produce the bars, various raw materials such as types of grain, nuts and fruits are combined and then heated. The heated cereal mass in the next step with heated syrup of honey , table sugar mixed and brown sugar, rolled out to a grain carpet and brought the latch into its known elongated narrow form. Depending on the type, the bar is then covered with a glaze - e.g. B. made of chocolate - dipped and in this case gets its famous chocolate foot. After cooling down, the bar receives its packaging.

In contrast to today, the first Corny muesli bars were not packed in folding boxes but in cellophane . Corny was initially available without an additional flavor. The first flavored variety was called the Chocolate Corny Muesli Bar. The lower part of the bar was dipped in milk chocolate. Today, Corny is available in different varieties such as chocolate, white chocolate, coconut, yogurt or hazelnut.

criticism

In August 2009, the consumer protection organization Foodwatch published the results of an investigation into various Corny bars. The organization found that the product was a “sticky, highly processed industrial sweet” that by no means, as Schwartau claims, “made the best of the grain” and provided “delicious energy and strength for the day”. According to Foodwatch, the wrong product image shown on the packaging contradicts the prohibition of deception under German food law .

The organization also found that the bar, which usually consists of a third of sugar and only ten percent of cereal flakes, is by no means a “healthier alternative to chocolate bars” as Schwartau claims. With 1839 kJ (= 439 kcal) per 100 g, the bar is only 222 kJ (= 53 kcal) less than the Twix chocolate bar . In response to media inquiries, the company stated that it was "very interested in transparency" towards consumers. All ingredients are listed on the Schwartau website and the Corny product packaging. The list of ingredients also contains "the quantities of the essential valuable ingredients".
