Muesli bars with chocolate chips

A muesli bar is a candy in the form of a bar that contains processed grains .

General

Depending on the variety, chocolate , dried fruit , nuts , fruit fillings, milk cream or glaze are also processed. Muesli bars are produced in a hard, crispy or in a soft, pliable consistency.

The bars contain puffed , flaked , roasted or ground cereals of different types in different mixtures. The shape, cohesion and consistency are determined by food chemical and technical processes, such as the addition of carbohydrates , fats or gelatine and baking . The addition of spices and fruits allows flavor variations. In addition to conventional products, there are also organic muesli bars.

Muesli bars are considered a healthier alternative to other sweet snacks, not least because of their high fiber content , although some products have a high sugar content . There are now bars that do not contain any added sugar. Most of the ingredients are then only bound with syrup ( e.g. maltitol syrup ) and are somewhat lower in calories.

history

It is not clear who the invention of the muesli bar goes back to. The American farmer and author Herrick Kimball claims he sent the idea of marketing a muesli in bar form to an inventors' magazine in 1975. She was then picked up by the food industry without his being paid for it. The invention is also attributed to the American inventor Stanley Mason.

Regional differences in the term

In Germany, the term muesli is not regulated by law, so that muesli bars do not have to consist mainly of breakfast cereals and cereals , but may contain maltitol syrup as the main ingredient . In Switzerland, the term cereal bar is used because "muesli" means little mouse there , in contrast to "muesli", which stands for small mush and colloquially for cereal flake mixture .
