Corozal (also Corozal Town to distinguish it from the district of the same name ) is a small town in Belize, Central America on the border with Mexico .

The city has around 9800 inhabitants (as of 2010) and is the capital of the Corozal District . Corozal Town was founded in 1848 by refugees from the Caste War in the Yucatán . Fort Barlee was built in 1870 and Corozal became a garrison town.

On September 27, 1955, the city was hit by Hurricane Janet and badly damaged. Only about ten houses remained and the city had to be rebuilt. The hurricane killed 16 people in Corozal.

Part of the city was built on the former Mayan ruins of Santa Rita . The Mayan ruins of Cerros are located near Corozal Town .
