Maria Co-redeemer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maria Co-redeemer (Latin Corredemptrix ) is a title or invocation used within the Roman Catholic Church for Mary , the mother of Jesus , who is supposed to express the belief that she participates in Christ's work of redemption in a unique way. This invocation is often associated with the invocation of Mary, Mediator of Graces .

meaning

The idea of Mary as a co-redeemer existed very early. The title Co (n / r) redem (p) trix has been used since the 15th century . But it was not until the 19th century that there was a major theological discussion of this term, which today has an ecumenical dimension.

In the run-up to the Second Vatican Council , around 500 Council Fathers argued for Mary to be a “mediatrix” and around 50 for a “co-redeemer”. In Lumen Gentium 60 ff, the council uses the title “mediator” or speaks of a “mediation” of Mary. In Redemptoris Mater 38 John Paul II uses the term “mediation in Christ”. In the 20th century there were also unsuccessful efforts to petition the Holy See to proclaim a fifth Marian dogma of Mary Co-redeemer and mediator of all graces .
