Nicolaas Cortlever (born June 14, 1915 in Amsterdam , † April 5, 1995 ) was a strong Dutch chess player .

Cortlever took part in the unofficial Chess Olympiad in 1936 and in the Chess Olympiad in 1939 , 1950 , 1952 and 1954 for the Netherlands team. He achieved the second best individual result on the fourth board in 1950. He won tournaments in Beverwijk in 1939 and in Leeuwarden in 1942. He qualified several times for the Dutch national championship.

In 1950 he was awarded the title of International Master by FIDE .

In the opening a variant of the Sicilian Defense bears his name: 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 Nf6 4. dxc5. He also created several endgame studies .

His last Elo rating was 2390, in July 1971 it had its highest rating of 2420. Before the introduction of the Elo numbers, Cortlever's best historical rating was 2595 in January 1952.
