Maria Corazon Sumulong Cojuangco Aquino (born January 25, 1933 in Paniqui , Tarlac Province , Philippines , †  August 1, 2009 in Makati City ) was President of the Republic of the Philippines from February 1986 to 1992 . She was widely known as Cory Aquino or Tita Cory ( Aunt Cory ).

Life

Aquino was born the daughter of one of the richest families in the country. She completed her studies in the USA with a BA in French . Since 1954 she was married to the popular opposition senator Benigno Aquino .

When he fell victim to an attack on August 21, 1983 at Manila airport on his return from exile , Corazon Aquino became the new hope for the opposition to the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos . She took over the chairmanship of the Laban party alliance and stood against Marcos in the February 1986 elections . Both the dictator Marcos and the challenger Aquino then claimed victory for themselves. In the ensuing growing unrest, both the military and the US refused to support Marcos. After the mass protests of 23/24 On February 25th , the EDSA revolution , Marcos fled into exile in the United States . Corazon Aquino took over the presidency on the same day.

During her presidency, a new constitution was passed in 1987 and an agrarian reform was carried out in 1988 . During her tenure, the U.S. military presence in her home country ended. Several coup attempts by Marcos-loyal military officers against their government failed. In 1992 she renounced a candidacy for a further term in favor of Fidel V. Ramos . Ramos (* 1928) was sworn in on June 30, 1992 as the twelfth President of the Republic of the Philippines and remained so until 1998. Aquino was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Prize in 1998 in the Peace and International Understanding category.

Aquino died on August 1, 2009 of complications from colon cancer . The then Filipino President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo , whose resignation Aquino had vehemently demanded, then honored her as a “national shrine” and announced ten days of national mourning . The funeral took place in the Manila Memorial Park in Parañaque City ( Metro Manila ).
