Coryphantha compacta is a species of plant in the genus Coryphantha from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet compacta comes from Latin and means 'firm, squat' and describes the thorns of the species.

description

Coryphantha compacta usually grows individually with spherical light green to dark green shoots that reach heights of 2 to 6 centimeters with a diameter of 5 to 9 centimeters. The warts , up to 8 millimeters long, are close together. The single central spine , which can also be missing, is strong, hooked and up to 2 centimeters long. It is yellowish with a darker tip. The 11 to 16 white to yellow, 1 to 2 centimeter long radial spines are stiff, lie on the shoot surface and are interwoven.

The yellow flowers are up to 2 centimeters long and reach the same diameter. The fruits are egg-shaped.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Coryphantha compacta is common in the Mexican states of Chihuahua and Durango .

It was first described as Mammillaria compacta in 1848 by George Engelmann . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose placed them in the genus Coryphantha in 1923 .

Synonyms are Cactus compactus (Engelm.) Kuntze , Coryphantha palmeri Britton & Rose and Coryphantha heyei . Frič .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
