Coryphantha echinus is a species of plant in the genus Coryphantha from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet echinus comes from Latin , means 'hedgehog' or 'sea urchin' and refers to the prickly habitus of the species.

description

Coryphantha echinus usually grows individually, but occasionally forms large groups that are almost completely covered by the thorns. The spherical to short cylindrical gray-green shoots reach heights of 3 to 20 centimeters with diameters of 3 to 6.5 centimeters. The strong warts , up to 12 millimeters long, are conical to cylindrical. The one to four, sometimes missing, whitish central spines are pointed darker. The upper one is very stiff, protruding and mostly straight. The lower central spines are straight and slimmer. The 16 to 30 whitish, interlocking radial spines have a length of 1 to 2 centimeters.

The shiny, bright yellow flowers reach a diameter of 2.5 to 5.5 centimeters. The green fruits are up to 2.5 inches long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Coryphantha echinus is common on alluvial plains and limestone gravel in the Mexican states of Chihuahua and Coahuila .

The first description as Mammillaria echinus by George Engelmann was published in 1856. Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose put the species in 1923 in the genus Coryphantha .

Nomenclatory synonyms are Cactus echinus (Engelm.) Kuntze (1891), Mammillaria radians var. Echinus (Engelm.) K.Schum. (1898), Coryphantha radians var. Echinus (Engelm.) Y.Itô (1952, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 33.3) and Coryphantha cornifera var. Echinus (Engelm.) LDBenson (1969). Included in the species are Mammillaria pectinata Engelm as a synonym . (1856), Cactus pectinatus (Engelm.) Kuntze (1891) and Coryphantha pectinata (Engelm.) Britton & Rose (1923).

Coryphantha echinus is in the endangered Red List species the IUCN as " Least Concern (LC) ", d. H. not endangered, classified.
