Costantino Nicas

Costantino Nicas (also: Costantino Nikas , Greek Κωνσταντίνος Νικάς ; born April 7, 1935 in Kiaton , former Prefecture of Corinthia , Greece ) is a Greek Byzantinist and Neo- Graecist and Professor of Neo- Greek Studies at the Università degli studi di Napoli “L'Orientale” .

Life

Nicas studied Greek Philology at the University of Athens and then Modern Greek Language and Literature at the University of Rome . From 1962 he was an assistant at the chair of Central and Modern Greek Philology at the University of Athens. From 1965 research assistant at the Chair of Byzantine Philology at the University of Rome. In 1971 he was appointed Professor of Byzantine Philology at the University of Naples L'Orientale and in 1974 Professor of Modern Greek Language and Literature. From 1971 to 1982 he was also a full assistant for modern Greek at the University of Naples Federico II .

Research priorities

In the field of Byzantine philology, he has dealt with Byzantine hymnography and hagiography and has contributed to the edition of Analecta hymnica Graeca e codicibus eruta Italiae inferioris directed by Giuseppe Schiro (1905–1984) . In the field of modern Greek language and literature, he has dealt with the Greek Enlightenment , Greek literature abroad, the Greek dialects in southern Italy ( Calabria and Puglia ), modern Greek literature from the 15th century to the present day, the relations between Greeks and Italians, and Greek Literature and culture worked in Italy and in the West. As a translator, Nicas has made countless Greek and Italian poets and storytellers known in the other country.

Nicas founded the philological journal Italoellinikà and a corresponding series of monographs Quaderni di Italoellinikà and organized numerous international congresses on topics of modern Greek literature and Greek culture. He dealt with the ancient Greek theater in courses and, in addition to many other cultural events in the field of dance and music, also supervised numerous productions.
