Cotyledon tomentosa is a species of the genus Cotyledon in the thick-leaf family(Crassulaceae). The specific epithet tomentosa comes from Latin , means 'felty' and refers to the general appearance of the species.

description

Cotyledon tomentosa forms dwarf, richly branched, compact and rounded dwarf shrubs and reaches a height of up to 11 centimeters. The green shoots are covered with long hair. The green and soft-haired leaves, which are variable in shape, hairiness and type of peripheral teeth, are inverted lanceolate to oblong, flattened and are 2.3 to 6.5 × 1.5 to 3.2 centimeters in size. The upper third of the leaf is covered with 3 to 8 reddish teeth.

The inflorescence is up to 16 centimeters high and consists of 1 to 3 dichasias . The reddish inflorescence stalk has a diameter of 4 millimeters at the base. The flower stalk becomes 7 to 8 millimeters long. The green sepals are 6 × 5 millimeters and the orange-red corolla 12 to 16 millimeters in size. The flower tube is 15 × 9 millimeters in size. The bent-back corolla lobes are 10 millimeters long. The three stamens protrude up to 5 millimeters. The yellow anthers are flattened and 1.5 millimeters in size. The oblong nectar flakes are green and 1 × 2 millimeters in size.

Distribution and systematics

Cotyledon tomentosa is widespread in the South African provinces of Western Cape and Eastern Cape in the Succulent Karoo in subtropical thickets.

The first description by William Henry Harvey was published in 1862.
