CouchFM ( spelling : couchFM ) is a student-run university radio in Berlin . It is a project of the Humboldt University in Berlin in cooperation with the Babelsberg Media Innovation Center (MIZ). The MIZ-Babelsberg is an institution of the Medienanstalt Berlin-Brandenburg (MABB). As a training radio, it teaches media-interested students from all Berlin universities and colleges the relevant stages of radio production, which they can then actively use by helping to shape the couchFM program.

CouchFM has been broadcasting daily from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on the 91.0 MHz frequency of the radio station ALEX Offener Kanal Berlin since October 2016 . You can also access the broadcasts in the live stream and in the ALEX Berlin media library.

Program focus

couchFM sees itself as radio from students for students. Internally, the editorial team is divided into the areas of word, music, online, video and event editing. The campus radio aims to appear cross-media and is active in social networks . In terms of content, couchFM focuses on student and Berlin-related topics. In the music selection, the focus is on emerging artists and new releases.

history

In the fall of 2011, Jens Wendland (former head of radio at Sender Freies Berlin ) and Wolfgang Mühl-Benninghaus decided to develop and publish a campus radio for Berlin together with students. For the winter semester 2011/12 they offered an introductory event on the subject of radio for students in order to work out a concept together. Under the guidance of professional journalists, the students were able to produce everything that belongs to a radio broadcast: news, reports, comments and reviews as well as the necessary moderation of the contributions. The topics initially revolved around student life and the university.

couchFM is based on an initiative of the Medienanstalt Berlin-Brandenburg (mabb). In 2011, Berlin universities were invited to submit training broadcasting concepts. The Institute for Musicology and Media Studies at Humboldt University Berlin was able to convince with its concept. From then on, the project was supported and funded by the Babelsberg Media Innovation Center (MIZ), an institution of the Berlin-Brandenburg Media Authority (mabb). The campus radio should be open to students of all disciplines and a wide range of topics. The training of the first student editors started in the winter semester 2011/12. Jens Wendland, together with those in charge of the student radio at TU Dortmund University and program makers from radio Eins , conveyed the basics of radio making to students. In MIZ-Babelsberg, the students were able to produce their first contributions in the in-house radio studio.

The pilot program was broadcast on May 11, 2012, and regular broadcasting began on October 19, 2012. Initially with a pre-produced broadcast hour on Friday, the program was extended to a second program hour on Monday due to the strong response and the steadily growing number of editorial staff. It was broadcast in the radio program of ALEX berlin on the radio frequency 88vier . In the course of the start of the new full frequency 91.0 MHz from ALEX Berlin in October 2016, the structure, appearance and station rhythm of the campus radio were revised so that a daily program was now possible.

On October 13th, couchFM celebrated its five-year birthday in MIZ-Babelsberg with a five-hour live program produced in front of an audience.

Radio training at couchFM

At the start of each semester, couchFM offers students from all universities and colleges in the Berlin area the opportunity to actively participate. Theoretical basics are imparted in regular seminars at the Institute for Musicology and Media Studies. The MIZ-Babelsberg supplements this training with a multi-part workshop program to train practical skills and supports the editorial team in implementing their content. This ensures that radio theory and radio practice are closely interlinked.

Since 2014 Hermann Meyerhoff (Head of Program Coordination , rbb ) has been leading the university seminar "Introduction to Digital Radio" at the beginning of each semester. The seminar conveys the theoretical background of the radio work and serves as preparation for the practical work at couchFM.
