The Counsel River is a river in the western part of the Australian state of Tasmania .

River course

The river has its source on the eastern slopes of Mount Hobhouse , a mountain on the northeast border of the Franklin Gordon Wild Rivers National Park . From there it flows east-southeast and flows into the Derwent River about five kilometers south of Tarraleah .
