The courbette (from French "courbette" = deep bow, kicker) is a term from the classical art of riding , it is one of the schools above the earth . A distinction is made between elevations ( levade and pesade ) and school jumps ( croupade , ballotade , caper , courbette).

The courbette represents a refinement of the basic gait of gallop. Its expressive raised phase (with Mezair , Terre à Terre and Carrière) is the only form of representation of galloping horses in the fine arts up to the invention of photography.

Courbette is the name given to a short, high swing gallop in two-stroke. Both front hooves are raised and put down again, then both hind legs jump in one leap. There is little or no space gain. This movement is called mezair when it is less elevated. If the pairs of legs do not jump exactly next to each other, but offset in front of each other, one speaks of terre-à-terre.

From 1850 a distinction was made between Courbette (as described above) and Double Courbette by Seeger, Steinbecht and Holleufer. With the double courbette, the horse jumps a leap forward on the hind legs (it "rebats") at the moment of the courbette, since it has its front legs in the air, and only then lands with its front legs again.

From this simple rebattering, the practice developed in the Spanish Riding School in Vienna of letting horses perform several jumps in a row on their hind legs. This multiple rebatting is called the “Viennese Courbette”.

In the Cadre Noir military academy founded in Saumur in 1814 , “Courbette” means a very high, short pesade.

In the present, the meaning of the term has changed in Saumur and Vienna. In Saumur, the courbette is a pesade, Vienna a leap of the thumb. "
