The Coves dels Hams ( Castilian : Cuevas del Hams , 'fish hook caves ') are a stalactite cave system on the east coast of the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca . The caves are located in the municipality of Manacor , about one kilometer west of the town of Porto Cristo .
Like the Coves del Drac ('Dragon Caves') also located near Porto Cristo, the Coves dels Hams are a well-known tourist attraction of the island in the region ( Comarca ) Llevant .
description
The Coves dels Hams were discovered by Pedro Caldentey on March 2nd, 1905 . The ramified cave system on the road to Manacor has, like the Coves del Drac, an underground lake that is less extensive. The caves owe their name to the unusually tree-like forms of the stalactites and stalagmites . Hams is a Mallorcan word for fish hook or harpoons.
The explorer's son, Lorenzo Caldentey, equipped the caves with the lighting that can be seen today. The tour of the stalactite caves takes place in groups led by multilingual guides. On a tour of around 500 meters, you cross a dozen different caves. In one of the caves there is a concert show "Magical Mozart" with light effects, which is very similar to the show in the cave of Coves del Drac . A rowing boat adorned with a chain of lights glides over a small lake during this show to the music of Mozart. The caves are very busy in the summer months.
