Cowichan Valley

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cowichan Valley is a region around the Cowichan River , Cowichan Bay and Cowichan Lake on Vancouver Island , in British Columbia , Canada . There is a public discourse about the origin of the name "Cowichan" which many suspect is an Anglicism derived from the First Nations tribe of Cowichan , who called the area "Quw'utsun '", which is what much like "sun-warmed land" means.

Among the parishes that are within the current Cowichan River / Cowichan Bay watershed are Duncan , Lake Cowichan , Cowichan Bay, Cowichan Station, and Maple Bay. Other nearby communities are primarily made up of the Cowichan Valley Regional District . Crofton and Chemainus are in the middle of the Chemainus River Valley, while Cobble Hill, Shawnigan Lake, Mill Bay, and Ladysmith are on the coastal plain, which includes the two river deltas of the Cowichan and Chemainus Rivers.

The Cowichan Valley is home to a growing number of vineyards and wineries . These include the Cherry Point Vineyards, Blue Grouse, Glenterra, Vigneti Zanatta, Venturi-Schulze, and Averill Creek. Due to the warm and dry summers as well as the humid and mild winters, the area belongs to the only part of Canada with a Mediterranean climate , which enables good growing conditions for many grape varieties.

The Trans Canada Trail runs through the valley, so there are plenty of opportunities for hikers. On January 7, 2010 a measuring station was installed to monitor the air quality.
