John Justin (1940)

John Justin (born November 23, 1917 in London , United Kingdom , as John Justinian de Ledesma ; † November 29, 2002 ibid) was a British actor on stage, film and television.

Life

Born in London, the son of an Argentine haciendero spent his youth on his father's hacienda before returning to England. Justin first appeared on the theater boards in Plymouth in 1933. Four years later he joined John Gielgud's repertory theater troupe . Almost at the same time, England's most powerful film producer, Alexander Korda , brought him in front of the camera. The attractive Londoner became famous in 1940 with the central part of Ahmad in Korda's lavish, prestigious, expensive and colorful film fantasy from 1001 Nights The Thief of Baghdad . The Second World War , which Justin spent mainly as a test pilot and instructor in the uniform of a Royal Air Force pilot, initially prevented the continuation of his film career.

After 1945, John Justin was unable to build on the fame he had achieved with The Thief of Baghdad , despite an intense film presence and leading roles on both sides of the Atlantic, because the mimes lacked interpretational sophistication. Instead, Justin focused again on theater work and was a member of the Old Vic Theater from 1959 . In 1960 he made his debut on Broadway in New York City . Later, in the 1970s, he was seen with supporting film roles, especially in productions by Ken Russell . In the meantime, television had become more and more important in his career. As a stage performer, John Justin was seen as Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman as well as in William Shakespeare's As You Like It , in Agatha Christie's Die Mausefalle and in Frank Wedekind's Lulu .

John Justin was married three times, including to actress Barbara Murray . He died in 2002 at the age of 85.
