Leo Reiffenstein (born July 27, 1856 in Vienna , † January 5, 1924 in Salzburg ) was an Austrian history and portrait painter, born the son of a painter and lithographer Gottlieb Benjamin Reiffenstein (born September 10, 1822; † 27. March 1885), operator of an art printing company.

Reiffenstein studied from 1871 to 1876 at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under August Eisenmenger . After completing his studies, Reiffenstein worked in the studios of Hans Makart and Heinrich von Angeli .

On October 13, 1876 Reiffenstein was enrolled in the technical painting class of the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . From 1880 he exhibited his works in the Vienna Künstlerhaus . At that time he dealt with historical topics ("Emperor Maximilian's Bride Trip", "Coronation of Frederick II in Palermo")

In 1882 Reiffenstein became a member of the Künstlerhaus Wien . 1885 its genre picture "disputation" was from the collections of the Emperor I Franz Joseph purchased. From 1893, for health reasons, he lived in the family's summer villa in Mondsee in the Salzkammergut .

In 1896 he settled in Salzburg and moved into a studio in Mirabell Palace . Since then he has mainly devoted himself to landscape painting .

Reiffenstein had three sons; the oldest - Manfred (1894–1986) - became a mechanical engineer.
