The Craigantlet (according to other sources also Craiganlet ) was a Cypriot container ship that on 26 February the 1982 Killantringan Lighthouse in Porta Maggie Bay, Wigtownshire, in southwest Scotland ran aground. The container ship was en route from Liverpool to Belfast when it hit the rocks just a few meters from the lighthouse. The lighthouse keeper raised the alarm, and so was the crew of the ship from a Sea-King - helicopters of the 829th Marine squadron, stationed at Prestwick be saved.
The ship
The ship was built by Reposaaren Konepaja shipyard in Reposaari , Finland , and was launched in 1972.
Consequences of doom
Since the ship had loaded containers with dangerous goods and some of them had been wrongly declared as empty, it was decided, in view of the impending environmental disaster , to evacuate the area for almost six weeks until the affected containers had been cleared away. During this time an automatic beacon was installed on the lighthouse.
today
Parts of the bow can still be seen in Portamaggie Bay at low tide in 2011.
