The Réserve écologique de Lac-à-la-Tortue is an ecological reserve in the south of the Canadian province of Québec in Shawinigan .

It is located in the area of the municipalities Lac-à-la-Tortue and Shawinigan-Sud , which have been incorporated by the city of Shawinigan since 2002 , 6 km south of Grand-Mère . The reserve was established in 1992 on an area of 565.69 ha.

Kalmia angustifolia from the genus of laurel roses

It protects and represents a form of bog called “tourbière ombrotrophe” in French and “bog” in English, the raised bog. The eastern section of the moorland stretches for 11 km between Lac à la Tortue and Lac Troptôtchaud , while the second section extends from Troptôtchaud to Saint-Mathieu in a north-west direction. The reserve covers only part of the western section. There are numerous pools in its core area. This resulted in two forms of raised bog, namely the one around one of these small to very small lakes and the one without such bodies of water.

Where there are no ponds, shrub-like vegetation spreads , which is mainly characterized by heather plants and peat moss (French: sphaignes). In addition, there are areas that are occupied by sedges and are here and there characterized by open forest areas, where the East American larch thrives, as well as the gray birch .

Black spruce , larch and Kalmia angustifolia from the genus of laurel roses ( Kalmia ) and peat grapes ( Chamaedaphne calyculata ) thrive where there are pools that are on average more than 2 m deep . There are numerous herbaceous plants especially on the banks of the small lakes .

The moors offer a refuge for endangered or threatened plants : Platanthera blephariglottis from the genus of forest hyacinths , Xyris montana from the genus of Xyridaceae or Utricularia geminiscapa from the genus of water hoses .
