Cranfield Airport ( ICAO code EGTC) is the airfield of Cranfield University and is mainly used for training pilots and for test flights, although it is also approved for public transport by the Civil Aviation Authority . The airfield is located eight miles southwest of Bedford in Bedfordshire , England and has two runways . One is 620 m long, the second is 1799 m long.

history

Construction of the airfield began in 1936 and on June 1, 1937 the base of the Royal Air Force was opened, which put the facility into operation on July 1 of the same year. After the beginning of the Second World War , the Royal Air Force Station Cranfield ( RAF Cranfield for short ) was expanded. The grass runways have been replaced by fixed runways. The Luftwaffe bombed the airfield from the summer of 1940. In August 1941, a training unit was set up, which mainly practiced night operations with the Bristol Blenheims . After the end of the war, flight operations ceased in June 1945, but a few months later a school for test pilots was moved from Boscombe Down .

In 1946 the College of Aeronautics was founded , wind tunnels and other training facilities were built. In the late 1950s, the decision was made to expand the school to include other technical disciplines, and so the institution that is now called Cranfield University was created.

navigation

As a navigation aid, there is a non-directional radio beacon 3.5  nautical miles northeast of the airfield and runway 21 is equipped with an instrument landing system.
