Crawford is a city in McLennan County in the US state of Texas . It is located approximately 30 miles west of the city of Waco . Crawford was founded on August 12, 1897. In 2016, 741 people lived there on 2.4 km 2 .

Settlement of the area began in the 1850s, and a village center called Tonk Crossing or Crawford Crossing formed at a ford through the Bosque River about two miles east of the present settlement. In 1867 the local pub became a stagecoach station on the Brownwood Stage Line , and in 1871 Crawford got its own post office. When the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway built the route from Temple to Fort Worth two miles west of the city in 1881 , the town center moved to the railway line. In 1890 the place had about 400 inhabitants, who lived mainly from growing cotton, maize and wheat.

The city is best known for the Prairie Chapel Ranch , which belongs to George W. Bush and where he spent his holidays during his presidency and also received state guests.
