Cremisan

Cremisan is the name for a branch of the Salesians of Don Bosco in Palestine in Bethlehem .

history

The monastery was built in 1883 on the current border between Jerusalem and Bait Jala on the ruins of a Byzantine monastery from the 7th century . The facilities were recognized in 1967 by the then Jordanian government and registered by the Ministry of Education.

From the beginning, wine was grown there in order to finance the projects from the proceeds of the winery: a vocational school for CNC , bakers, electronics and electrical mechanics, technical mechanics and car mechanics, carpenters and woodworkers and a theological seminar for students from all over the world World. The vocational school is attended by over a hundred young people all day and a similar number as evening school. In 1986 a school for interdenominational and interreligious work was added, in which young people receive an education regardless of their denominational or religious affiliation.

The second Intifada since autumn 2000, with all its political consequences and above all with the sealing off of the occupied territories by Israel, deprived the projects of their economic basis. The monastery is exactly opposite the Jewish settlement of Gilo .

In 2006, Israel decided to build the barrier around the monastery so that it would be on the Israeli side. That would cut it off from Bethlehem, its students, workers and suppliers. Since then there have been protests against this project. Because of the political sensitivity of this matter, the wall was initially not built. In January 2011, the Ministry of Defense decided to build the wall through the middle of the monastery area, so that the women's monastery with the schools remains on the Palestinian side, but the men's monastery with the wine cellar is transferred to the Israeli side. Although this corresponds to the economic interests of the individual areas, it requires the demolition of two buildings and claims land within the complex.

In April 2015, the Israeli Supreme Court ruled that the wall could not be built as planned. The Israeli defense minister decided in August 2015 to erect the wall as planned; a “gap” in the wall should only remain near the monastery. Israel began clearing olive trees on Palestinian land to build the wall. Nikola Khamis, the mayor of Bait Jala, said on August 17th: “The area here is quiet and there are no problems. Today they uprooted 1500 year old trees. I don't understand how they want us to live here in peace. "

Viticulture and winery

The vines are grown on slopes between 600 and 930 m, but only 2% of the wine production (approx. 7000 hl per year) comes from our own grapes . The rest is obtained from the Bait Jala , Bet Schemesch and Hebron growing areas . The wine is also available in Germany and Austria.
