The Crescent Lake National Wildlife Refuge is a wildlife sanctuary established in the US state of Nebraska in 1931 .

The National Wildlife Refuge is an area of ​​185 km² in Garden County , Nebraska, which includes the largest extensive and protected sand dunes in the United States. Twelve small lakes and numerous ponds are connected by underground water-bearing layers. Some of the dunes are overgrown with bushes and grass, while others have no vegetation. The dunes were formed after the last retreat of the ice masses in the Holocene . Crescent Lake NWR is approximately 45 km north of the capital of Garden County Oshkosh . Importance of the protected area

The facility of the refuge serves to protect migrating birds and the wild animals living there. More than twenty breeding pairs of the American heraldic bird, the bald eagle , have been sighted there during their temporary stay. In addition, around 200 species of birds can be observed in the protected area.

The mammal species in the Wildlife Refuge include the pronghorn , mule deer , white-tailed deer , bobcat , beaver , prairie dog and raccoon . The numerous waters attract anglers with their abundance of species such as American perch , glass-eyed perch and largemouth bass .
