  • Kumasi, Bird and Ron: former members of the Slausons, a gang during the civil rights movement

The documentary sheds light on the background of the gang in South Central , a district of Los Angeles that became known as gang district. The film is mainly about the Crips and Bloods, whose gang disputes have claimed more than 15,000 victims to date.

At the beginning, the emergence of the first black street gangs in Los Angeles is described, which saw themselves more as clubs. These emerged after the Second World War when the impoverished rural population, consisting of former slaves, moved to the cities to follow the American dream . Suffering from racial segregation , the first young people banded together. In 1965 there was the riot of Watts and the alliance with the civil rights movement and the founding of the Black Panther Party . Original TV recordings from that time are shown.

At the end of the 1960s, the Crips and their counterpart, the Bloods, were finally founded. The documentation now illuminates the conflict and the numerous victims it claimed. In doing so, however, the internal structures or the traces of the conflict are not presented, but rather the social impact and the overall societal relationships are focused on. In particular, the collapse of the labor market as part of the New Economy , the resulting lack of prospects and new drugs such as crack are identified as the main causes of the rapidly growing, bloody conflict between the two gangs. The 1992 riots in Los Angeles are also discussed. This is also followed by interviews with mothers who lost their children in the gang war. Former gang members report on their everyday life in the past and point out ways out of the cycle of violence. Various members of charities also have their say.

background

Stacy Peralta comes from the US surf and skater scene and published, among other things, the documentary Riding Giants . As a resident of Los Angeles, he had a particular interest in the subject. Fifteen years before the film was made, he sought funding and established contacts, particularly through the West Coast hip-hop scene around Snoop Dogg and The Game . He collected material and conducted various interviews. In 2008 he finally managed to finish the film. As with his earlier films, he used a mixture of interviews, original recordings and photos.

The film premiered on January 20, 2008 at the Sundance Film Festival . In Germany it was first released on August 14, 2009 as a DVD premiere. The film grossed $ 69,562 in the US, including 10,537 on the opening weekend. The film was nominated for the Image Award and an Emmy for "Best Documentary"

reception

The documentation was received favorably by the critics. Above all, the less sensational presentation was positively highlighted.

"Crips and Bloods" moves far away from the naive and commercially motivated glorification of gang violence and rather tries to trace the historical and social causes of ghettoization and social grievances in problematic American neighborhoods. The documentation adopts the perspective of those directly affected and also endeavors to appraise initiatives that have committed themselves to combating these social grievances, so it is not limited to a representation of the desolate conditions, but also suggests possible solutions and calls for them social rethinking.
