Riding Giants is a 2004 documentary directed by Stacy Peralta . It starts with the origins of surfing and then focuses primarily on big wave surfing . The well-known surfers Laird Hamilton , Jeff Clark and surf pioneers like Greg Noll or Mickey Munoz star in the film.
action
Riding Giants begins with a historical overview of surfing and its beginnings in Hawaii . The main focus is on big wave surfing, which originated in the 1950s at Waimea Bay , to the development of lighter boards and techniques such as tow-in surfing , which made it possible to ride the giants. As it took several generations of surfers to do this, the film introduces 3 surfers as representatives. Greg Noll, one of the world's first big wave surfers in the 1950s and 1960s, Jeff Clark, who discovered the Mavericks Wave in Northern California and surfed there completely alone for many years, and Laird Hamilton, one of today's surfing icons.
production
Stacy Peralta became famous for his documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys (2001), which deals with the rise of skateboarding , of which he was an integral part. French producer Franck Marty chose him to make a new type of documentary about big wave surfing. Peralta justified his primary concern of such a surf documentary with wanting to see such a film himself and that he hopes with this film to provide an answer to the question why some people strive their entire life to ride waves.
Riding Giants uses images, archival material, "simulated" material, private films and interviews. Surfers interviewed include Jeff Clark, Laird Hamilton, Dave Kalama , Gerry Lopez, Greg Noll, and Kelly Slater .
