Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII ( Japanese ク ラ イ シ ス コ ア - フ ァ イ ナ ル フ ァ ン タ ジ ー VII-, Kuraishisu Koa - Fainaru Fantajī Sebun ) is an action role-playing game developed and published for PlayStation Portable by Square Enix . The game is a prequel to Final Fantasy VII , which is one of the most successful computer games to date and the most successful Final Fantasy part to this day . It is the fourth part of the "Compilation of Final Fantasy VII" series. Those involved in the production were Yoshinori Kitase (head of production, who has worked on Final Fantasy VI and VII ), Hajime Tabata (game director) and Tetsuya Nomura ( character designer ).

action

The protagonist of the story is Zack Fair, SOLDIER of the Shinras special unit.

Thanks to their monopoly on mako energy and military operations, the Shinra energy company's control over the world is growing steadily. Shinra's headquarters are in Midgar, an ever-growing mako city due to Shinra's influence and a sign of Shinra's incredible wealth.

The organization consists mainly of mercenaries divided into different ranks. The highest rank in this "SOLDIER" unit is the First Class, to which Angeal belongs. Zack Fair's goal is to achieve this class. The company is headed by the Shinra boss, which is discussed in more detail in Final Fantasy VII. Zack Fair works hard to make his dream come true. He trains every day with his teacher Angeal.

At this time an incident occurs: Genesis, a first-class SOLDIER, disappears on a mission in Wutai along with many other soldiers. The Shinra Corp. decides to send a SOLDIER unit out. This includes Angeal, Zack and Sephiroth, who is widely known as a hero around the world.

During the game, Zack meets Aerith, becomes best friend of Cloud, and finds out the truth about Genesis and Angeal's origins, Project G., which Sephiroth disapproves and which justifies his hatred of Shinra. This answers questions that were left open in Final Fantasy VII and presents new facts. There Zack notices that Angeal and Genesis as well as Hollander each have black or white wings. They need what are known as "S cells" to stop them from degrading. After the fight with Sephiroth, Cloud and Zack are put into Mako capsules as test subjects in Professor Hojo's secret laboratory in the old Shinra villa in Nibelheim. With a little help, Zack can free himself, but Cloud is unable to move due to a Mako overdose. Meanwhile, Zack and Cloud have been pronounced dead on the Shinra file. That means you want their death and that is why they are now continuously attacked by Shinra soldiers. Zack can flee to Banora.

In the very last fight, Genesis transforms into Genesis Avatar with the help of the energy from the life stream. But Zack can defeat him and Genesis' demotion is stopped. After the fight, Genesis is carried away in a helicopter by 2 unknown people ("Nero" and "Weiss", both of whom you meet again in Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII ). Zack himself and Cloud make their way to Midgar to meet Aerith again, but the two are caught by the Shinra Army, whereupon a fight ensues. Zack fights until his strength runs out and he is finally shot down. When Cloud regains consciousness, he can no longer help the fatally wounded Zack, who gives Cloud the master sword with the last of his strength and makes him his "living legacy". Zack dies and passes into the stream of life.

Gameplay

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII is an RPG with action and menu elements. The digital mind wave combat system was specially developed for this game.

The player has full control over Zack, the camera can be rotated with the L and R trigger. Battles appear randomly or scripted at certain events. The battles begin without a break on the same level and background.

The player fights against one or more enemies at the same time. These fights consist of a combination of sword attacks, attack spells and healing magic. There are also special attacks and events from the DBW system (digital waves of consciousness). These attacks are similar to those from Final Fantasy VII or are even completely adopted, with the exception that they work here in real time and not turn-based. The DBW system consists of three slot machine-like bars that can lead to special events with the help of SP points. These can be events such as invulnerability, healing, but also combo attacks. This so-called "power surge" attack is usually stronger than a normal attack. In addition, the calls known from Final Fantasy VII can be conjured up.

The CGI animations are of impressive quality and fit seamlessly into the action of the fight. Furthermore, you can intervene in the battle by blocking, moving and evading. The player can put together and use the spells himself before each fight. Between battles, players can explore various familiar locations from Final Fantasy VII and interact with people. Also known from Final Fantasy VII are mini-games that appear in between.

Characters

Most of the characters from Final Fantasy VII reappear, including Cloud, Sephiroth, Aerith, Tseng and of course Zack, with the new protagonists also playing a major role in some cases.

New protagonists are:

  • Angeal Hewley , first rank SOLDIER and mentor of Zack Fair. He is the original owner of the bustersword that his family owns, which Cloud will use seven years later.
  • Lazard , director of the SOLDIER unit. He assigns the player information about the SOLDIER missions and serves as a contact person for all SOLDIER units.
  • Dr. Hollander , former Shinra scientist who hates Shinra because Hojo, not him, was appointed head of the research department. He's the one who carried out Project G, which gave Angeal and Genesis their special skills.
  • Genesis , first-rate SOLDIER who was lost at the beginning and the main character of evil. Voiced by Oliver Quinn
  • Cissnei , the youngest member of the Turks to date, who works under the code name "Cissnei". Cissnei uses a shuriken and quickly builds a sympathy for Zack, so that she helps him one after the other.

publication

The game was first presented at the E3 2004 game fair , before the PlayStation Portable was actually released. A first demo was playable at the Jump Festa 2006. The game was released in Japan on September 13th in two versions: a normal edition and a strictly limited "10th Anniversary" edition together with a signature from Tetsuya Nomura and a specially designed PSP Slim & Lite. This was completely in silver and had Cloud, Zack and Sephiroth on the back. This version was sold out after a few days. The European version appeared in mid-June 2008.
