Cristian Dan Preda (born October 26, 1966 in Bucharest ) is a Romanian political scientist and politician ( PD-L , PMP , non-party).

Life

Preda studied history of philosophy at the University of Bucharest and the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and graduated in 1991 with both the Romanian licentiate and the French DEA . From 1992 he worked as a research assistant at the Faculty of Political Science at the University of Bucharest, and in 1996 he was promoted to assistant . His doctorate took place in 1998 at the French elite university École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris. The dissertation deals with the "liberalism of hopelessness" in the years 1938–1960. His doctoral supervisor is Pierre Manent .

He then continued to teach as a lecturer at the University of Bucharest, from 2000 as a Conferențiar (junior professor). In July 2004 Preda was appointed professor. From 2004 to 2010 he was dean of the Political Science Faculty of the University of Bucharest.

In parallel to his academic work, Preda acted as an advisor to President Emil Constantinescu ( PNȚCD ) from 1999 to 2000 . Under Foreign Minister Mihai Răzvan Ungureanu , he was State Secretary for Francophonie from 2005 to 2007 . The President Traian Băsescu then appointed him to his advisory team, to which he belonged from 2007 to 2009.

In the 2009 European elections , Preda was elected as a representative of Băsescu's Partidul Democrat Liberal (PD-L) in the European Parliament , where he joined the EPP Group . From July to December 2012 he was deputy chairman of the PD-L. In early 2014, Preda moved from PD-L to Partidul Mișcarea Populară (PMP). In the European elections in May of the same year, he was elected as the PMP's top candidate for a further term. In September 2014 he resigned from the PMP, but kept his mandate as a non-party. He remains a member of the EPP Group. In January 2019 he joined the new PLUS party of the former Prime Minister and EU Commissioner Dacian Cioloș .

Preda is also a member of the Board of Directors of the European Democracy Fund (EED).
