Cristina Garcia (* 22. August 1977 ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party and activist.

In 2012 she was elected to the California State Assembly , the lower house of California , where she represents the southeastern part of the 58th constituency of the state of California, comprising Los Angeles County .

Life

Cristina Garcia attended public schools and after graduating from high school , she earned a bachelor's degree from Pomona College . She then attended Claremont Graduate University , where she graduated with a Masters degree .

She is a professional teacher and taught math for 13 years before being elected to the California Parliament . She has taught at Huntington Park High School, Los Angeles City Community College, and statistics at the University of Southern California, among others . Garcia is currently working on her PhD at the University of Southern California. She lives in Bell Gardens .

She has been a member of the State Assembly since November 2012. She was re-elected in 2014 and 2016. The 58th constituency she represents includes the localities of Artesia , Bellflower , Bell Gardens , Cerritos , Commerce , Downey , Montebello , Pico Rivera and Norwalk .

Children's and women's rights are key issues in her political activities. Among other things, she introduced a law (Bill 1561) into the Assembly that would exempt feminine hygiene products (e.g. tampons ) from taxation.
