The Crno jezero ( German "Black Lake") is a glacial lake in northern Montenegro . The lake is located at an altitude of 1416  m , about 3 km west of Žabljak .

The Crno jezero lies at the foot of the Međed , a mountain peak of the Durmitor massif . It occupies an area of ​​about 500  hectares . Strictly speaking, the lake consists of two lakes, Veliko jezero and Malo jezero (literally: large lake and small lake ). The two lakes are connected by a narrow waterway that falls dry during the summer months, creating two separate bodies of water.

  • The Veliko jezero covers covers an area of 0.338, has a maximum depth of 24.5 m, m, a maximum length of 855 m and maximum width of the 615th
  • The Malo jezero covers an area of ​​0.177 km², has a maximum depth of 49.1 m, a maximum length of 605 m and a maximum width of about 400 m.

The maximum length of the entire Crno jezero is 1,155 m. Because of its greater depth, the so-called Small Lake actually has the greater volume.

The Crno jezero is fed by numerous mountain streams, of which the Mlinski potok (literally: Mühlbach ) is the most important tributary. Further inflows only occur seasonally during the snowmelt and are mostly unnamed. The outflow of the Crno jezero is the Otaka.

Tourist development

The Crno jezero is a very popular destination in the Durmitor area. It is one of the largest and most famous glacial lakes in the Durmitor massif. The lake is easily accessible and can be reached on foot from the center of Žabljak. An approximately 3.5 km long path circles the entire lake and is a popular destination for those seeking relaxation and hikers. The Crno jezero is the starting point for numerous hiking trails into the Durmitor massif and to the smaller lakes around Žabljak. Set back from the lake shore is a restaurant that serves traditional Montenegrin cuisine.
