Ansell's shrew ( Crocidura ansellorum ) is a species of shrew from the genus of the white-toothed shrew ( Crocidura ). It is known from the three type specimens collected in 1973 by William Frank Harding Ansell's son, and one further specimen, which in turn comes from Donald G. Broadley in 1990.

features

The dimensions and characteristics are only known from four specimens. The head-torso length is 56 to 64.9 mm, the tail length 40.1 to 51 mm, the hind foot length 10.5 to 12 mm, the ear length 7.5 to 8 mm, the weight 4.2 to 5 g, the skull length 16.8 to 17.7 mm and the skull width 8 to 8.4 mm. The total length of the upper row of teeth from the first incisor to the third molar is 7.2 to 7.6 mm. Ansell's shrew has a soft coat. The fur hair is about 4 mm long. The back fur is dark chocolate brown. The peritoneum is washed out slightly gray-brown. The limbs and ears are dark chocolate brown. The tail length is 80 percent of the head-trunk length. The gray-brown tail is about 51 percent hairy. The skull is broad and domed high. The upper incisor is long and curved. The first canine tooth is large and pointed. The second and third are almost the same size. All three canines have well-developed marginal ridges. The third upper molar is medium in size. The karyotype and the number of teats are unknown. The closest relatives of Ansell's shrew are the great gray-brown musk shrew ( Crocidura luna ) and Bottego's shrew ( Crocidura bottegi ).

Distribution, habitat and way of life

Ansell's Shrew Pedicle in is Ikelenge Mwinilunga District in northwestern Zambia endemic . She lives in gallery forests along rivers. Their way of life is largely unexplored.

nomenclature

It was first described in March 1987 by Rainer Hutterer and Nicolaas Jacobus Dippenaar, initially under the name Crocidura anselli , with which William Frank Harding Ansell and his son were honored. According to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature of 1985, the original name was an incorrect original spelling . However, since the type epithet refers to two people (father and son), the ending must therefore be -orum. In October 1987, Hutterer and Dippenaar published a correction in which the scientific name was changed to Crocidura ansellorum .
