Two specimens have a skull length of 14.9 and 15.2 mm and a skull width of 6.5 and 7.2 mm, respectively. In three copies, the total length of the upper row of teeth from the first incisor to the third molar is 6.1 to 6.2 mm. The back fur is rich chocolate brown with a rust brown tint. The peritoneum is a little lighter. The ears are dark brown. The front and rear limbs are hairy brown. The claws are short. The medium-length tail makes up about 60 percent of the total length and is about 80 percent hairy. The skull has a high and rounded cranium. The area between the eye sockets and on the cheekbones is short but wide. The front teeth are poorly developed. The third upper molar is quite wide. The karyotype and the number of teats are unknown.

Distribution area, habitat and way of life

Bottego's shrew is known from only three locations in the highlands of Ethiopia, including the terra typica northeast of Lake Turkana between Badditu and Dime and Marsabit in northern Kenya. Specimens of a similar species of shrew from West Africa, which were mistakenly mistaken for Bottego's shrews, are now assigned to the West African pygmy shrew ( Crocidura obscurior ). No detailed information is available about the habitat and way of life.

status

The IUCN classifies Bottego's shrew in the “ data deficient ” category . Information about the population, the frequency, the habitat requirements, the exact distribution area and the degree of endangerment are not known.
