Vittorio Bottego (around 1889)

Vittorio Bottego (born July 29, 1860 in Parma , † March 17, 1897 in Oromiya , Ethiopia ) was an Italian explorer of Africa .

The officer Bottego undertook two expeditions to the Horn of Africa at the end of the 19th century : The first (1892–93) took him to what is now Somalia , where he was one of the first Europeans to explore the Jubaland and the areas around the Webi and Imi rivers .

1895-1897 he returned to the still unexplored upper Jubaland and explored Lake Rudolf , the Sobat and the Omo . Then he tried to get back to the coast via Ethiopian territory, which was an extremely dangerous undertaking, since the Ethiopian Empire was at war with Italy. Near Oromiya his expedition troop was attacked by warriors of an Oromo tribe and Bottego was killed in battle. Bottego's remains were never found, the story of his last expedition was told by two of his companions, Vannutelli and Citerni , who survived the battle and were held captive by Menelik II for two years .
