features
Crocothemis sanguinolenta reaches a body length between 35 and 37 millimeters. The males are reddish, the females tend to be more yellowish. The females darken with age. The abdomen ( abdomen ) appears crowded, but is not very wide and has a fuzzy blackish line on the top. The syn thorax is dark purple to brownish red. There are lighter and darker strokes on the shoulder. The face is reddish, with the labrum and ante clypeus tinged with orange. The postclypeus is red, just like the front of the forehead. On the top of the forehead, the shade of red becomes duller, taking on the hue of the vertex . The complex eyes are dull purple and have a blue line on the back. The hind wings measure between 27 and 28 millimeters. The males have a scarlet red to amber-colored spot at the base of both pairs of wings, which is clearly more pronounced on the hind wings. In the females, the coloring of these basal spots is weaker and they are smaller overall. Otherwise the wings are transparent. The wing mark ( pterostigma ) is yellowish to reddish brown and measures a little over three millimeters.
Habitat and manner
The species lives in flowing as well as standing, stony waters in otherwise open terrain. It usually lurks prey on stones and rarely on vegetation.
