history

The Crook County Bank Building was built in 1910 and put into use in 1911. Over the years it has housed three different banking institutions. It was first used by the Crook County Bank. This was replaced in 1923 by the Bank of Prineville. After this bank went bankrupt during the Great Depression , the building was bought by AR Bowman for his company. Bowman was involved in titles and insurance, and used the building from 1935 until his death in 1970.

Bowman's widow and two daughters left the building to Crook County for use as a museum in 1971. The Crook County Historical Society was given responsibility for the operation of the AR Bowman Memorial Museum through an agreement with the county government. Originally the museum was run by volunteers and the county paid for the consumption costs. Crook County's voters passed local taxes in 1976, 1988, and again in 1998 to ensure the payment of museum employees and operating costs. These funds also contributed to the extensive renovation of the building in 1992. In 2001, the operators received a grant from the State Historic Preservation Office of Oregons to re-cover the roof.

The former bank building is an outstanding example of the Prineville building development at the beginning of the 20th century. Because of its importance to the history of the city and its individual architecture, the Crook County Bank Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 19, 1991.

Building

Crook County Bank is located on the southeast corner of the intersection of Third and Main Streets in Prineville, Oregon. It is a two-story building in the neo-Romanesque style . It was built in 1910 using the bricks from a quarry that was near the city. The stones for the Crook County Courthouse were taken from the same quarry in 1909.

After the Crook County Historical Society acquired the building, they added new stairs to the second floor, replacing the old wooden staircase at the east end of the building. Otherwise, the interior of the building was not significantly changed. On the first floor there are still the bronze checkout counters with marble tabletops, the artificial glazing, alabaster lamps and the mahogany paneling that were a feature of prestige banking institutions during the first half of the 20th century.

museum

Today a local museum is housed in the former bank building. The AR Bowman Memorial Museum is operated by the Crook County Historical Society and specializes in the history of Crook County and Central Oregon. The original building interior was used in the design of the museum. There are sections that deal with the City of Prineville Railroad, as well as the local logging industry and military history. The exhibits also include furniture, clothing, photographs and objects from the pioneering days. The museum has around 700 books on the history of Oregon . A shop in the museum sells books on local history and souvenirs.
