Ctenochromis pectoralis ( Syn . : Tilapia pectoralis ) is a species of cichlid that occurs in East African Tanzania and possibly also in Kenya .

features

The species reaches a total length of 7 cm. The head is twice as long as it is wide. The muzzle is rounded, the upper muzzle profile is straight. The large eye has a diameter of one third of the length of the head. The large mouth extends below the front edge of the eyes. The jaw teeth are arranged in five rows, the outer one consisting of very large teeth and the inner one consisting of very small teeth. The cheeks are covered with three rows of scales. Their length is slightly smaller than the diameter of the eyes. The gill rakes are short. Ten are on the lower section of the first gill arch . The tail fin stalk is as high as it is long. The caudal fin just ends. In the dorsal fin, the soft rays are longer than the hard rays. The pelvic fins are as long as the head and reach the anal fin. The scales are strongly toothed comb scales. Their size changes abruptly between the pectoral and pelvic fin attachment. There is a scaly patch on the chest.

Ctenochromis pectoralis is brownish and shows ten to twelve dark horizontal stripes on the sides of the body. There is a dark spot on the gill cover. The dorsal and anal fins are patterned by dark stripes and a large, white, dark-edged eye spot in the soft-rayed section.

Like all species in the genus Ctenochromis , Ctenochromis pectoralis is a mouthbrooder .
