Ctenochromis is a genus of the cichlid family (Cichlidae) that occurs in the Congo Basin , Lake Tanganyika , its inflows and outflows ( Lukuga , Ruzizi , Nua ) and a few other rivers in East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania).
features
Ctenochromis species are small to medium-sized cichlids with oval or slender bodies and reach lengths of 7 to 21 cm. The diagnostic characteristic of the genus is the scaling, which consists of comb scales below the upper sideline and round scales above. Immediately in front of the pelvic fins is an unscaled region. Ctenochromis species are quite inconspicuous and usually gray-silver or gray-brown in color. Males are slightly larger than the females, have egg spots on the anal fin and show only slightly more conspicuous colors compared to the females. Their fins are only slightly larger.
The Ctenochromis species are ovophilic, maternal mouthbrooders . The number of eggs per clutch is low and is usually less than 50.
species
- Ctenochromis horei (Günther, 1894) ; Lake Tanganyika and Lukuga
- Ctenochromis luluae (Fowler, 1930) ; Lulua
- Ctenochromis oligacanthus (Regan, 1922) ; Ubangi

The genus Ctenochromis is not monophyletic in its current composition . The type species Ctenochromis pectoralis is phylogenetically at the base of all Haplochromine , Ctenochromis pollination and Ctenochromis oligacanthus belong to a lineage of cichlid species from southern Africa, which derived from the genus Serranochromis has received the provisional name "Serranochromini" Ctenochromis horei one of the Tropheini and Ctenochromis luluae may be a synonym for Thoracochromis stigmatogenys .
