The Tropheini are a tribe of the cichlids (Cichlidae). All species of the Tropheini are endemic to Lake Tanganyika .

features

Tropheini species are moderately high-backed fish with a rounded head profile and a lower or terminal mouth. They become 7 to 36 ( Lobochilotes labiatus ) cm long. Depending on their diet, they have flattened teeth with sharp edges (algae eaters) or three-pointed teeth. The latter comb out small organisms from the algae with their teeth. All Tropheini species are mouthbrooders .

Systematics

Tropheini species avoid open water and live in rocky habitats. Their evolution was made possible by strong fluctuations in the water level of Lake Tanganyika, as a result of which populations were repeatedly isolated from one another ( allopatric speciation ).

The Tropheini include about 25 species from the genera Ctenochromis , Gnathochromis , Limnotilapia , Lobochilotes , Petrochromis , Pseudosimochromis , Simochromis and Tropheus . Petrochromis , the largest genus, is not monophyletic . The relationship between the genera is shown in the following cladogram :
