The approximately 350 km long Lukuga is the only outflow of the East African Lake Tanganyika and a right tributary of the Congo .

course

It leaves this lake on its west bank, which belongs to the Democratic Republic of the Congo , near Kalemie . From there it flows in a breakthrough valley in a westerly direction through the Central African Sill . The Central African Sill is one of the steep borders of the East African Rift Valley . A chain of lakes extends within this rift valley, including Lake Tanganyika. Finally, the Lukuga flows into the Lualaba , a source river of the Congo, and has overcome a height of over 200 m.

The flow of the river depends heavily on the water level of Lake Tanganyika.
