Aulonocranus dewindti is an East African cichlid species that occurs in Lake Tanganyika , as well as in its tributary Ruzizi and its only outflow, the Lukuga .
features
The fish have a moderately tall body, large eyes and are about 14 to 15 cm long. They are horizontally striped yellow and blue. This pattern is very noticeable in the males and also extends to the unpaired fins, in the females it is much weaker and their fins are colorless and transparent. As in Cyathopharynx furcifer , the anterior ventral rays of the males are long. During courtship the colors of the males become even stronger and the blue zones become deep Prussian blue . The dorsal fin has 11 to 13 hard rays , the anal fin three, as in most cichlids. The caudal fin is forked. The mouth is terminal, the teeth are conical and arranged in two rows, the teeth of the outer row being larger.
- Scale formula : mLR 33–36.
- Gill rake 17–20.
Way of life
Aulonocranus dewindti lives semi-pelagically as a migrating fish close to the shore or in open water over sandy bottoms. It forms swarms that can contain several hundred animals. It feeds on plankton . The fish are mouthbrooders . After being laid, the eggs are taken into the female's mouth and the eggs and larvae are protected in the mouth until the young fish have reached a length of approximately 1.6 cm.
Systematics
The species was described in 1899 by the Belgian-British zoologist George Albert Boulenger as Paratilapia dewindti and in 1920 by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in the genus Aulonocranus , which has remained monotypical since then .
