Thoracochromis stigmatogenys , also known as Haplochromis stigmatogenys , is a species of cichlid that occurs in the southern Congo Basin in the lower Kwango , in the catchment area of the Kasai and in the middle Luapula .

features

The species reaches a total length of 10.5 cm. Head length and body height are around 30% of the total length. The head is half as wide as it is high. The muzzle is rounded, the upper muzzle profile is slightly convex. The mouth extends below the front edge of the eyes. The lips are thick. The jaw teeth are arranged in three or four rows. 40 to 50 teeth are in the upper jaw. The gill rakes are short. Seven through eight are on the lower section of the first gill arch . The cheeks are covered with four to five rows of scales. Their length corresponds to the diameter of the eyes. The tail fin stalk is as high as it is long or slightly higher. The caudal fin is rounded.

Thoracochromis stigmatogenys has a brownish upper and a whitish lower half of the body. There are seven or eight indistinct dark transverse bands on the sides of the body. There is a dark spot on the gill cover. The top of the head is patterned with two to three dark stripes. The hard-radiating section of the dorsal fin is gray with round light spots, the soft-radiating section is yellowish and shows obliquely arranged black stripes. The anal fin is yellowish and becomes increasingly blackish towards the edge. The caudal fin is yellowish and patterned with small blackish round dots.

Like all species from the genera Haplochromis and Thoracochromis , the species is a mouthbrooder .

Systematics

The species was first described scientifically in 1913 by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger under the name Tilapia stigmatogenys . In Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes it is listed today as Haplochromis stigmatogenys , Fishbase places the species in the genus Thoracochromis . However, it is not particularly closely related to the type of Haplochromis ( Haplochromis obliquidens ) or to that of Thoracochromis ( Thoracochromis wingatii ), but belongs to a family of cichlids from southern Africa, which derives the provisional name "Serranochromini" from the genus Serranochromis. had received.
