Thoracochromis is a genus from the family of cichlids (Cichlidae), which occurs in eastern Africa as well as in the Congo Basin , in Angola and Namibia .
features
Thoracochromis species are relatively small cichlids and grow to be 8 to 15 cm long. The diagnostic characteristic of the genus are the breast scales, which are much smaller than the scales on the rest of the body. In addition, the sexual dimorphism for a haplochromine cichlid genus is very low. The males are usually similarly inconspicuous in color as the females (but not in Thoracochromis brauschi ), but always have clearly visible egg spots on the anal fin. They are significantly larger than the females, have larger fins and dorsal and anal fins, and the pelvic fins are always pulled out.
Like all Haplochromini, the Thoracochromis species are mouthbrooders .

Systematics
The genus Thoracochromis was created in 1979 by the British ichthyologist Peter Humphry Greenwood . The genus is not monophyletic . The type species Thoracochromis wingatii belongs to the "East African radiation" and is very closely related to the species-rich genus Haplochromis . In addition to molecular biological data, this is also supported by the distribution in the Nile and Lake Albert. Thoracochromis moeruensis , on the other hand, is close to Pseudocrenilabrus . Eight other Thoracochromis species ( T. albolabris, T. bakongo, T. brauschi, T. buysi, T. callichromus, T. demeusii, T. fasciatus and T. stigmatogenys ) belong to a family of cichlids from southern Africa, the derived from the genus Serranochromis has received the provisional name "Serranochromini". The relationship of the remaining two Thoracochromis species ( T. lucullae and T. schwetzi , both from Angola) is so far uncertain. They could also belong to the "Serranochromini" or form a clade with Pseudocrenilabrus .
