Thoracochromis demeusii is a species of cichlid that occurs in the lower reaches of the Congo between Luozi and Matadi .

features

The fish species can reach a total length of 15 cm, but only adult males reach this length, females remain significantly smaller. The basic color of Thoracochromis demeusiiis an inconspicuous medium brown. Individual scales can shine silvery in their center. Dorsal and caudal fins can be patterned with a few red or blue dots. The points are usually more numerous and more pronounced in male fish. The upper edge of the caudal fin is marked in some males by a black and red border. Your anal fin shows some small, bright egg spots. The fish have a pointed snout and a slightly concave forehead profile. In dominant males, the bend of the forehead profile becomes more and more evident up to the formation of a slight forehead hump. The tail fin of the fish is rounded.

The way of life, nutrition and reproductive biology of the fish have not yet been researched. Like all Haplochromini species, Thoracochromis demeusii will be an ovophilic mouthbrooder in which the female takes care of the brood.

Systematics

The species was first described in 1899 by the Belgian-British zoologist George Albert Boulenger under the scientific name Paratilapia demeusii . Fishbase now leads the species under the name Thoracochromis demeusii , in the Catalog of Fishes it is listed under the name Haplochromis demeusii . The relationships between the rheophilic (flow-loving) genera Thoracochromis , Oreochromis and Schwetzochromis and the rheophilic species from the genus Haplochromis are so far only insufficiently known and their systematics requires further research.
