Order : Cichliformes
Family : Cichlids (Cichlidae)
Subfamily : Pseudocrenilabrinae
Tribe : Haplochromini
Genre : Thoracochromis
Type : Thoracochromis moeruensis
Scientific name
Thoracochromis moeruensis
( Boulenger , 1899)

Thoracochromis moeruensis ( Syn .: Haplochromis moeruensis ) is an African cichlid that occurs in southern Africa in the Mwerusee and in the lower and middle Luapula .

features

Thoracochromis moeruensis reaches a body length of 10 cm, is slender and has a relatively short head with a concave forehead profile. The basic color is olive brown, below the dorsal fin there is a dark longitudinal band. The dorsal fin is lined with dark. Dorsal, anal and caudal fins show a few dark points.

Like all Haplochromis relatives, Thoracochromis moeruensis is an ovophilic mouthbrooder in which the female takes care of the brood. The species' way of life and diet have not yet been researched further.

Systematics

The fish species was first described in 1899 by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger under the name Paratilapia moeruensis . Today it is assigned either to the genus Thoracochromis or Haplochromis . However, it is closely related to Pseudocrenilabrus and belongs to an adaptive radiation with at least 15 phenotypic variations or species of this genus in the Mwerusee.
